Hydrogen is the most efficient energy carrier, and hydrogen can be obtained from different raw material sources including water. Among many hydrogen production methods, environmentally friendly and high-purity hydrogen can be obtained by electrolysis of water. However, in terms of sustainability and environmental impact, PEM water electrolysis is considered to be the most promising technology to produce high-purity and efficient hydrogen from renewable energy sources, and emits only oxygen as a by-product without any carbon emissions.

In addition, the generated hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) are used directly in fuel cells and industrial applications. However, only 4% of the world’s industrial hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water, mainly due to the high cost of this method. Today, the increasing demand for green hydrogen production has increased the interest in PEM water electrolysis. Therefore, much research has been done recently in the development of cost-effective membrane electrodes for PEM water electrolysis.
